CHAPTER 1 - No Communion

"Look what I got!" Dad yelled as he walked down the basement steps coming home from work. DeAnna and her two brothers, Larry and Bobby, stopped running around the pool table. They were dressed like Batman, Robin and Catwoman. They looked up at their dad, his arms were held tight to his chest. He walked toward them with something moving in his arms.
"What is it?" DeAnna asked she was the oldest 6 years old. Larry was 4 and Bobby was 3. They ran over to him all excited to see what he had. Their dad opened up his arms and sat it down on the floor. It was so tiny and it's long blond hair was hanging to the floor. It had a pugged nose face.
"It's a PUPPY!" Cryed DeAnna. "Aww, it's so cute!" She jumped up and down she was so happy. DeAnna was a lover of animals. The only other animal they had was Duke her dad's hunting dog. He was kept in a pen in the yard. They were never allowed to play with him. Although they did play in his dog house which for some reason was outside the pen on the other side of the yard. Their mom always yelled at them to get out of it.
"You'll get bugs all over you!" She'd always say. But they didn't care it was a cool fort to them. But knew better than to make mom mad so they'd get out.
DeAnna loved animals so much she'd always play with cats that wondered through the front yard while her mom was weeding the flower beds. Her mom would always tell her to leave them alone. She hated cats because she said they were sneaky. DeAnna just thought of them as being clever.
"Oh, can I hold her?" DeAnna asked her dad.
"Sure, but be gentle with her. She's only a baby." Said her dad.
"Her hair is so long! It's dragging the floor!" Larry was laughing so hard.
"Yea, she looks like some kind of a mop!" DeAnna exclaimed.
"What's her name?"Bobby asked.
"Well, we'll have to think of one for her. You know, she really does look like a dust mop. Hey, that's it we'll name her Dusty!" Her dad said.
So Dusty it was. The newest member of the family.

"Alright, come on upstairs now. Go wash your hands. It's time to eat. Your mother is waiting on us." Dad said as he picked up Dusty to carry her back upstairs. They all three ran up the stairs to get ready for dinner.
That night after her bath DeAnna ran over to her mom and dad in the frontroom as he layed there watching Star Trek. DeAnna always loved that show.
"Daddy?"
"What is it?" Her dad asked.
"Can Dusty sleep with me in my bed? Larry and Bobby sleep in one room. You and mom in the other. And I'm all alone in my room."
"Yes, that is way I got her. For her to keep you company at night so maybe you wouldn't be so scared sleeping alone in your room."
"Oh, thank you!" She exclaimed as she jumped up on his lap to give him a big hug. "I love you, daddy!"
"Ok, now let's get going to bed. Give your mom a hug and kiss goodnight. You have school in the morning."
She crawled over onto her mom. "Good night, mom!" She said as she gave her a big hug and kiss.
"Good night, DeAnna. You and Dusty go to sleep now."
"Ok, we will!" DeAnna ran back into the front room picking up Dusty and carried her off to bed.
Her brothers were coming out of the bathroom just getting done with their bath. "Where you going with Dusty?" Larry asked.
"I'm taking her to bed with me!"
"Why does she get to sleep with you?" He asked her.
"Because I'm all alone in my room!"
"Oh! Your just lucky." Bobby said.
DeAnna set Dusty on her bed and closed her bedroom door. She crawled into bed under the covers. "Good night, Dusty!" She said as she hugged her tight and kissed her. Dusty licked her face and waggled her tail. DeAnna was so happy.
The winter months seem to fly by and before she knew it was spring and all the snow was gone. DeAnna was lost in her love for Dusty. She was her best friend and companion. DeAnna loved waking in the mornings with Dusty licking her face. She was so happy and content. She felt Blessed by her Heavenly Father above.

DeAnna hated going to school and leaving Dusty. She was always thankfully for Fridays. She could spend all day Saturdays with her and part of the day Sunday. After Sunday school. They were Catholic and she had to go to study about God.
One Saturday morning it was a beautiful spring day. "Hey you kids! It's time to get up!" Their mom yelled down the hallway. "Come on, get up and get dressed. We're all going out to the lake. You're dad wants to take the boat out to go fishing!"
DeAnna jumped out of bed and rushed to get dressed. She loved going to the lake. She called to Dusty and rushed through breakfast. Her and her brothers all ran outside to help load up the boat. They all spent the day out on the water. That evening they all came home wore out and tired. It didn't take long before DeAnna and Dusty were fast asleep.

Sunday morning came and DeAnna got dressed to go to Sunday school. She loved to learn about God. It was a warm sunny morning and DeAnna gazed out the window as Sister Linda talked about God. She felt kinda dreamy thinking about God and all his creations in the world. It all seemed magical to her. She drifted into her own little world Sister Linda kept talking. I know I have a special connection to God. She thought to herself. She didn't know why she was thinking that. But it was like she just knew it. But she swore she would never tell anyone. They all might laughed at her and think she was crazy.
That afternoon she got home and Dusty was all excited to see her. She waggled her tail as she jumped up and down.
"Hi Dusty!" DeAnna said as she bent down to pick her up. Dusty licked her all over her face. DeAnna laughed out loud.
"Oh, I love you so much Dusty!"
"Alright now. Go get changed I need you and your brothers to peel some corn. We're having a cook-out. Your grandma and grandpa Rorbacz are coming over. And some of your aunts and uncles."
So DeAnna and Dusty ran off to her room to get changed. Then she went outside and her brothers were already peeling some of the corn on the picnic table by the swimming pool. They all peeled away but God how she hated having to pick those long hairs off the corn. Mom came up and cleaned the table to get it ready for everyone to eat on. Uncle Don & Aunt Kathy were the first to get there. They changed into their swim suits and went outside.
