A Hard Way

She went back to bed. Wishing she would just die. She missed her horse and the Martino kids. But HATED Big Tony! Why did he take her horse from her? That night her stomach hurt her so bad. She started throwing up blood. She was scared but she didn't want to tell anyone what she did. Before she knew it the sun was up and she had to go to school. Her stomach was still hurting so bad but she didn't want to want to miss school. She knew her dad would be mad. She made it through school all day with a sore stomach. She swore she'd never do that again.
Theresa a friend of hers lived the next rode over from her. They'd hang out together sometimes. Theresa smoked pot DeAnna tried some with her. DeAnna just felt really mellow. Theresa wanted her to spend the night with her that Friday night. She was gonna sneak out of the window and go to a concert with some friends. DeAnna called her grandparents but they said no! God, how she hated living there.
She meet a guy named Terry Powell. He was a friend of Joey's who lived behind her. They started going steady. He would come by to visit but her dad always ran him off. He sometimes hung around with Stan Powell who lived next door. DeAnna would go over to visit his sister Jan so she could see Terry. The service was drafting young men and Terry didn't want to go into the service. They often talked about running away to Canada together. DeAnna hated living with her dad. He was very mean and unemotional when he was sober. And violent was he was really drunk.
One day DeAnna and Pam Kerr the girl up the road was hanging out at the mall together. Pam was into stealing and they were at Belk Hudson's. DeAnna saw a hat she liked and didn't have any money. So she stuffed it under her shirt. As her and Pam walked out of the store a man came after them.
"Hey! You two stop right there!" The man said. DeAnna was scared. They both stopped. "Come with me!" They followed him into the store office. DeAnna knew they were in trouble. They found items on both of them and called their parents. Her grandma came to pick her up.
"Your dad sure is gonna be mad with you young lady!" Her grandma said rather upset. When she got home her dad was standing in the door waiting.
"You're grounded!" He yelled at her. "Get to your room NOW!"
DeAnna ran into her room jumped in bed and just cried. She didn't know why she had done that. It was really stupid. She guessed she just wanted to be cool like Pam.
DeAnna wrote a letter to her mom. She wanted to move back with her. Her mom wrote her back and told her she was still with Tony. She didn't want her living there with them. DeAnna called Terry telling him she wanted to run away to Canada with him. So they made plans to leave.

Then one evening she got a phone call from her mom. She had left Tony and was living down state with her parents and said she could come live with her there. Bobby wanted to go but her mom said no. She would have to work a lot and didn't have anyone to watch him while she worked. So DeAnna packed her bags once again to move.
