Betrayed

DeAnna got back from the hospital Judy had come to get her. Steve took her up to the hospital to stay with her son Keith. On the way to Marquette the song "Dust In The Wind" by Kanasa came on. DeAnna looked out the back window. All the trees and the sky and the long winding road. She thought of her brother Larry. The song was so true. "All we are is dust in the wind. And all your money would another minute by." Tears poured down her checks as she cried silently to herself.
He went back home to help take care of John. DeAnna stayed a few weeks at the hospital. Soon Keith was putting on weight and out of the danger zone.
The owner of the bar had a trailer for DeAnna to rent. So she and John moved in. She had decided to put Keith up for adoption. After he got out of the hospital he stayed with foster parents.
Days pasted DeAnna fixed up the trailer for her and John. She had a wood stood and bought loads of wood from a local man. She would try to split some to start the fires. She'd be swinging the axe it felt like forever. Micheal a friend of Steve's would stop by to help her out.
Steve took her to the fair which was two hours on the other side of Manistique. And of course, old Duane had to tag along. They wonder around and rode a few rides. They were standing in line waiting for a ride and there was a lady with a new born baby.
God, I wonder if that's my baby she thought. It bothered her the rest of the day. Just think the rest of your life you'll always be wondering that. She finally decided she couldn't put him up for adoption. She didn't know what she would do. But she couldn't do that!
Big Tony sold his property and was moving out west to Oregon. He actually had the nerve to ask DeAnna if she wanted to go with him. GOD HOW INSANE WAS HE!!!!!!!!! HELL NO!! SHE DIDN'T WANT TO GO OR BE ANYWHERE AROUND HIM!!! HOW COULD HE EVEN THINK SUCH A THOUGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! SHE NEVER WANTED TO SEE HIM AGAIN!!!!!!!!! EVER!!!!!!!!!!! SHE WAS GLAD HE WAS LEAVING!!!!!!!!!!! GET THE HELL OUT OF DODGE!!!!! AND STAY GONE!!!!!!!!!!! ROT IN HELL FOR ALL SHE WAS CONCERNED!!!!!!!!!!
Before she knew it Steve went downstate with Tony to stay with some friends there. DeAnna called him she didn't want him to go out west with his dad. She wanted to know what was going on?
"Steve?"
"Yea! Hi baby!"
"What's this I hear about you going out west with your dad? It's not true is it?"
"Yes, I have to. There's all kinds of work and better paying jobs out there."
"I don't want you to go! You need to stay here with me and John! We need you here."
"I cann't stay here. Work is getting worse and you know it. I cann't even keep us a place to live."
"I know. I just don't want you to go. I love you and you know that."
"I know you do, Pumpkin! I'll write to you when I get settled. Then you and John can come out there with me. I love you and the baby so much."
"I love you too so very much. I miss you!"
"I miss you too!"
"Alright! Well, write to me as soon as you can!"
"I will! I promise! Give John hugs and kisses for me!"
"Ok! Be careful! I'll be dreaming of you! Bye!"
"Bye Pumpkin!"
"Bye!"

DeAnna got a job working at the Seney wildlife refuge for the second time. She caught a ride from others who passed through Seney to work. Darla babysat for her. She lived behind DeAnna's trailer with her mom. Darla's mom was a widow. Her husband died on the ship Edman Fitz Gerald. The boat went down in the Great Lakes killing all board in the frozen lake. Cat Steven's wrote a song about the boat and the men dying aboard it.
DeAnna started having party's on the weekends. People from work and a few locals would come by. She was really enjoying her single life. She loved having fun with everyone.
During the week at nights when she couldn't sleep she would walk outside round the trailer. Not going too far so she would hear Johnny's cry if he awoke. There was a wolf who hung in the area at night. She would see him often and they kinda seemed to follow each other. Never getting very close. She had two other husky's tied outside the trailer who would be fast asleep.
One Friday nite DeAnna didn't feel like having much company and was home alone. There was a knock on the door. She had been laying on the couch watching tv. She got up to answer it. It was getting rather late.
"Tony!" She said as she opened the door. She started to hug him but took a step back. "God! What happened to you?"
He walked in and DeAnna held her nose he smelled so bad.
"I got sprayed by a skunk! It was by my car and I went to shoo him off and he sprayed me! I took a bath at Debbie's and we even used tomato juice. But it hasn't helped much!"
"I guess not. I heard that would do the trick!" DeAnna said.
"Let's sit outside so I don't stink up the trailer." He said as he walked out the door.
"I came up from downstate to visit. Got to get back to go to work though. I just really have to know something though." He said as he sat on the porch. DeAnna sat next to him and decided to breathe out her mouth so the smell wouldn't bother her as much.
"Yes?" She said looking into his eyes. God! How she did still love him. She should of married him. Maybe she wouldn't of went through all this mess.
"I want to know why when you came back up here you went with Steve instead of me?" He said looking into her eyes. His face filled with wonder.
DeAnna didn't know if she should tell him. But then thought it would be best.
"Well, all those times when we had the horses and we were so young Steve always called me names and you never stood up for me. Even when we lived in South Lyon in school Steve was in love with Debbie Vetis and you hung all over her too. Right there in front of him and me!"
"I know." He said. "And I'm really sorry. I always loved you though."
"Well, what's done is done." DeAnna said looking up at the stairs.
"You're right. But cann't we get back together now?" He said almost in tears.
"I couldn't do that to Steve. You know how hard that would be." She started to cry herself. Trying not to let him see. "Alright! I guess I'll go then. Goodbye and good luck!" He said as he got into in car and drove away.
DeAnna went inside. God! I still do love him! She went to her room and cried herself to sleep. That next morning she still felt so heart broken. So she drove out to see her mom and sister Angelia in Newberry. Maybe that would make her feel better. She got to her moms and they talked a bit. But her heart wasn't in it. She walked into the frontroom to lay on the couch while the kids played and her mom did the dishes. Maybe I should get back with him. So she called Debbie's. But Debbie said he had just left to go back home. Gone! Well, maybe it's for the best she thought. That evening when she got home she felt empty and alone. She laid in bed remembering the times when Steve was gone off somewhere their dad yelling at Tony. Everyone knew he thought Carol his mom had run around on him and Tony was someone else's. She had wanted to run into the kitchen and tell his dad to stop yelling at him. And how many times she wanted to tell Tony to meet her behind the Wagon Wheel wanting to leave Steve. BUT SHE NEVER DID!!!!!!!!
