The whole week flew by. DeAnna was always in a hurry to get home. She use to take her time, school was only a block away.
She'd sometimes stop by some friends along the way that she walked home with. But not anymore she was always in a hurry to
see Dusty. She'd always tell Lesile & Kelly to come over to her house and play. First thing she'd do is take Dusty outside
and wait for them to come over.
One Saturday morining she went into the kitchen to eat breakfast. After she was done her dad called out to her. "Deanna,
come here and see if you can reach this?"
DeAnna walked over to see what your dad for her to reach for. It was a chain lock on the back door. She reached up and
even stood on her tippy toes but wasn't able to reach it.
"Good! We don't want you sleep walking down the road in the middle of the night!" Her mom said.
DeAnna wasn't aware that she slept walked. But come to think of it she would often wake up in the middle of the night
cold and looking for her covers. They would be found in weird places like her bedroom closet. And she knew she had them on
her when she went to sleep at night. Or sometimes no where to be found in her room. And she'd wonder into the frontroom
and find them on the couch. Always wondering how they got there.
Her mom and dad drank alot on the weekends and fought often. DeAnna would wake up and hung Dusty and cry herself
back to sleep. Sometimes her mom would wake her up an hour late for school. DeAnna hated that. Her mom would give her a pop
tart to eat on the way to school. Somedays it would be freezing cold and she'd have to walk to school all by herself. She'd
stand outside her classroom door crying because she didn't want to go in late. Usually a teacher would come by and see her
crying and take her into the classroom.
One weekend her grandma came by with a surpirse for her. She always bought neat things for her birthday and Christmas.
Like a Susie Bake oven that baked real cakes or her pretzel maker. She loved eating them after she made them. Her mom would
have birthday parties for them in the basement and invite the neighbor kids.
"DeAnna, look at what I got for you!" Grandma said. Her and her mom were sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee.
There was two packages all wrapped up with bows on them. But it wasn't any holiday that she knew of.
DeAnna jumped into grandma's lap. Dusty ran under the table playing with her ball.
"Here, go ahead and open it." Grandma said as she handed her the biggest package first.
"Ok!" She said graping the box and tearing it open. So excited to see what was in it. It was a beautiful white lace dress
with a matching bonnet, gloves and a little pocket book.
"Oh wow! How pretty!" DeAnna cryed out.
"Here, open the other one. This is all for you to wear to make your first Communion."
DeAnna tore into the other box. It was a pair of white dress shoes. She had a whole set to wear for her Communion.
"Thank you, grandma!" She said as she hugged her so tight. "I love you!" DeAnna was so happy. And now she couldn't wait
to make her First Communion so she could wear all her new things.
"Ok, let's go put it away. So it wouldn't get all dirty." Her mom said as she but it back in the box.
